About this item: "According to Akan traditions, the Osompa mask is usually given to a woman as recognition for her diligent work," explains master carver Daniel Nyadedzor. "Osompa means "good service" in Akan dialect, and it is given with some money too, when the woman leaves to get married." Nyadedzor carves the striking sese wood mask by hand and adorns its face with delicately embossed brass plates. About our Artist: 'After completing a course in auto mechanics, getting a job was difficult and neither my parents nor I could afford the high cost of the machinery I would need to set up on my own. I struggled by doing menial jobs, but I managed to save what I could until I had enough money to buy a small piece of land and raise a wooden store. I started buying finished carvings, and in the evenings I learned to carve these beautiful items. My inspiration comes through dreams, so when I wake up I immediately put the design on paper in order not to lose the idea.'
