About this item: Higinio Hernandez patiently places each minute bead by hand in the creation of this extraordinary mask. Resplendent in the color and mysticism of Huichol art, it depicts the bright father sun, Taa ta ta. He crowns a face bearing images of jicuri (peyote) and iko (maize), all symbols of deep spiritual connotation essential to the Huichol tradition. - Keep out of heat - Keep out of the sun About our Artist: 'I was born in a Huichol indigenous community in the Mexican sierra, ' Higinio Hernandez says. 'I have followed my family tradition of beaded artwork. I make my masks over paper-mache figures, and my wife and I place the beads one-by-one on an adhesive coating of beeswax. The designs are completely improvised and are inspired by our reflections and feelings at the moment that we're working. ' Do not expose these pieces to direct heat or light, as it could soften the adhesive and loosen the beads.
